BET Weekend 2019!

Last weekend was one for the books. I traveled from New York to Los Angeles, California for BET Weekend. Though I arrived on Friday, the festivities started earlier that week. There were a number of events and concerts for people to attend. On Saturday, Urban News went to the BET Experience held at the LA Convention Center. When we entered the convention center the first thing we saw was the huge BET sign. This seemed to be the first stop everyone made once they walked in. As time went on there was a line to take a photos with the life size BET sign . The room was colorful with a number of things to do. We decided to walk around and get familiar with everything before partaking in the actual experience. Coca- Cola, Sprite and McDonalds were big sponsors for the BET Experience. They had stands where you could try all the new flavors from Coca cola and Sprite. I tried the orange Vanilla Coke for the first time and lets just say my life is changed forever. McDonalds was serving fresh french fries and smoothies.

Around 12 pm there was a 3 on 3 celebrity basketball game going on. I saw Yandy, A Boogie, Trevor Jackson and so many more. While walking around the game I saw a familiar face. It wasn’t just one familiar face but five of them. It was the Exonerated Five, Korey Wise, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Kevin Richardson. As a New York native I couldn’t do anything but hug them and let them know that they are loved. It was such a shock because I didn’t expect to see them there. After watching “When They See Us” I have so much love and respect for them.

As the day went on the Coca-Cola stage became more lively. There were a number of performances. The DJ’s turned that place into a party when they played “Swag Surf”. They had the crowd going crazy! The Lil Trap House was also featured at the experience. I was at the actual Trap Music Museum last week in Atlanta. Though considered the “Lil Trap House”, they set the atmosphere perfectly. It was literally a mini version of the actual Trap Music Museum in Atlanta. Urban News had the chance to speak with BET’s “The Grand Hustle” winner and general manger of the museum, Krystal Garner. Krystal is such a sweet and genuine individual. I think they should bring the Lil Trap Museum to New York next. Everyone would go crazy over it!

On Sunday, we attended the 2019 BET Awards held at the Microsoft Theater. This was our first time attending an awards show. It’s so different to see everything from behind the scenes. There were celebrities walking around and mingling. I had to remembered that they are people too. Cardi B and Offset opened the show with "Clout" and "Press". As always they killed it! I think my favorite part of the show was watching Mary J. Blige perform. Mary deserved her lifetime achievement award for her hard work in the industry. Her performance was beyond amazing and lively. I would love to see it all over again. While watching her performance all I could think about was her outfits. She had on an all white leather jumpsuit, swing coat, and later changed into a jersey. Come to find out Long Island native, Duckie Confetti designed this outfit just for her. Duckie Confetti is well known for his custom outfits and furs. You may have seen his designs on Monica, Nicki Minaj, Fabulous, Justin Combs and so many more.

The room became emotional when Nipsey Hussle’s family accepted his humanitarian award. He was working to change his community before his life got cut short. Marsha Ambrosius, YG, Dj Khaled and John Legend did an amazing job honoring Nipsey with a musical tribute. Rihanna also made a special appearance that night and everyone was amazed. I didn’t expect to see her there since she has been hiding. Overall the awards was well put together and entertaining.

All weekend events could be found on the BET Experience App. The app was constantly updated and notified you about every single event. I applaud BET for their hard work to prepare for this long weekend. Everything went as planned and was fun. Hopefully I will be back again next year!
