We’ve all been waiting for this night since the nominees were mentioned earlier this year. After we watched “When They See Us”, I think we have all been rooting for the movie to win every award. Jharrel Jerome was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie award for When They See Us. Well last night he won!
As Angela Bassett began to say his name, you could feel the chills through out the room. “And the winner is… Jharrel Jerome. The whole entire crowd stood up and applauded Jerome for his phenomenal performance. He portrayed both young and adult Korey Wise in Netflix’s When They See Us. In the beginning of his speech he said, he feels as if he should be in the Bronx right now waiting for his moms cooking. You can tell that though he is famous, he is also a very genuine, down to earth person. At the end of his speech he dedicated it to the Exonerated Five, “Most importantly this is for the men that we know as the Exonerated Five,”. He also thanked Ava for "giving me this opportunity”. You could tell Korey Wise was proud of Jharrel as we watched him tear up.
Jharrel Jerome is the first Afro-Latino to win an acting Emmy and the youngest winner in his category. Jerome beat fellow nominees Mahershala Ali, Sam Rockwell, Benicio Del Toro, Jared Harris and Hugh Grant. Congratulations Jharrel, you deserve this award and many more!
