According to The Charlotte Observer, Oprah Winfrey has donated $1.15 million to the United Negro College Fund ( UNCF). The donation was announced during the 17th annual Maya Angelou Women Who Lead Luncheon in North Carolina. Those in attendance were shocked by the surprise announcement.
The United Negro College Fund is the nations largest and most effective minority education organization. They provide scholarships to black students who want to further their education. The UNCF’s goal was to raise $500,000 during their event. They ended up raising $1.15 million, that is when Oprah Winfrey matched the amount raised. "So here's what I'm going to do, I'm going to match that number!” Winfrey said to applause, according to video shared by UNCF.
"I'm also here today because I believe in the power of education. There is nothing better than to open the door of opportunity for someone," she said.
Winfrey plans to return to Charlotte in January 2020 to promote "Oprah's 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus" health and wellness tour.
