Missy Elliott Receives Urban One's Music Innovation Award

Earlier this week at the Urban One Honors star studded event the beloved Missy Elliott became the latest honoree and recipient of the Urban One Music Innovation award.

Trending on social media is her emotional acceptance speech. Elliott opens up about her struggles to get to her current point of success and shows a high level of humility as she thanks those who have been on the journey with her.

Among the people she thanked in her speech Elliott thanked Lil Kim, who presented her with the award. She expressed that the two are more than just peers in the industry and Kim is more than someone that she looked up to; but described her as family. The reaction from the crowd and  social media confirms that Elliott not only deserves this award but has earned it since her debut single “Ooops (Oh My)” in 2002.

Elliott is no stranger to sharing the spotlight or giving back. She has supported many artists throughout her career and even gave some of them their chance at stardom.

One of her most notable mentees is Alyson Stoner who Elliott took under wing when Stoner was 8 years old and featured her in the ‘Work It’ music video. The publicity from the video has since aided Stoner in having much success in her entertainment career.

In addition to her urge for giving back and her humility, Elliott is known for revolutionizing hip hop with her stand out style and unmatched lyrics. Elliott’s lyrical skill was recognized less than a year ago when she became the first female rapper and third rapper to be inducted in the Songwriter Hall of Fame.

Missy Elliott’s most recent body of work was released in 2019 when she returned to the public’s eye once again with her EP, Iconology.

Oprah Magazine listed Missy Elliott’s top songs as:

  1. Get Your Freak On

  2. The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)

  3. Work It

  4. She’s a B**ch

  5. Gossip Folks featuring Ludacris
