David Schwimmer’s Comment Sparks Backlash

We all love a good reboot but what about recognition for shows that paved the way before your favorite groundbreaking shows?

F.R.I.E.N.D.S actor and director, David Schwimmer, in an interview with the Guardian made a comment about a reboot of the classic sitcom with an all Black or Asian cast as he talked about the flaws he felt the show had, has sparked some backlash.

Fans of the show Living Single quickly took to social media to remind Schwimmer and the world that Living Single, did it first. The show which was aired in the August of 1993 was about 6 friends living in Brooklyn, New York and aired over a year prior to Schimmer’s notorious show, F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

Living Singles own Erika Alexander chimed in with a couple of comments on Twitter.

There’s a Bigger Issue

Schwimmer’s comments, although seemingly harmless, brings light to a bigger issue of the lack of recognition that black entertainment community receives for the trends that arguably they started.

Lack of recognition of Black art is not a recent occurrence in the entertainment industry. Across all mediums, at one time or another Black art, media, and the individuals behind them have been forgotten, displaced, and sometimes simply disrespected.

In recent years, celebrities and the public have used their platform to bring attention to the issue and force change. Some ways were refusing hosting jobs for award shows and calling out the same award shows for lack of diversity not only in their host but in the nominees. Which has been a great start but there is still work to be done by the public, the celebrities we love, and the organizations we the culture deem important. Seeing as earlier this month it was reported that Black media outlets were all grouped together at the end of the red carpet and many celebrities were caught on camera walking past and ignoring the outlets.

Which Show Do You Prefer?

We’ve heard the comments and recognized the bigger issue but we want to know which show do you prefer and spend the most time watching?
