WWE Announced Layoffs Of Talent And More

Businesses in all industries have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the world of entertainment specifically, production has been shut down and talk-shows are being produced virtually; with the host(s) and guests filming from their home. In the world of sports, events including drafts, training and other events are intended to take place on a virtual platform.

As the virtual changes may have affected many jobs for employees behind the scenes, it is not common to hear companies admit that the jobs of the stars or ‘talent’ of the show has been compromised as well – until now.

World Wrestling Entertainment - or WWE as the organization is better known - made an announcement earlier this week that might be unprecedented in the world of entertainment as a response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In a press release the organization stated it is ”Cutting talent expenses, third party staffing and consulting;” as one for four actions being taken that is expected to result in a $4 million monthly save.

According to a separate statement released by WWE  the ‘talent’ that have been cut are wrestlers Kurt Angle, Rusev, Drake Maverick, Zack Ryder, Curt Hawkins, Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows, Heath Slater, Eric Young, Rowan, Sarah Logan, No Way Jose, Mike Chioda, Mike Kanellis, Maria Kanellis, EC3, Aiden English, Lio Rush, Primo and Epico.

The release of WWE talent comes as somewhat of a shock as other entertainment organizations such as UFC, NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB have either made minimal statements about what they are doing for their ‘talent’ or have vowed to do their best to provide for their ‘talent’.

The news also comes just days after the state of Florida deemed WWE an 'essential' business.

The question is, has WWE turned their back on their ‘talent’ during the COVID-19 pandemic? Or are they just the first of these organizations to take the steps of ‘laying off’ talent to ensure longevity during the COVID-19 pandemic?
