There is finally an at home test available for the public for COVID-19. The test was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier today, April 21, 2020.
According to a press release from the FDA an ‘Emergency Use Authorization’ (EUA) was issued for Laboratory Corporation of America (LabCorp) COVID-19 RT-PCR test. The EUA permits authorized facilities to test samples collected at homes.
Users of the collection kit will have to mail their sample collected from their nose using the provided materials, nasal swabs and saline. To prevent contamination other cotton swabs should not be used during collection.
LabCorp COVID-19 RT-PCR test is the only test for the coronavirus that is currently approved. The FDA is working with other testing facilities, but no other at-home test has been successful in the approval process.
There is not a specific date given for when the public can expect LabCorp’s’ COVID-19 RT-PCR to be available, however the test is expected to be available within the coming weeks. The test is only available via doctors’ orders.
