Beijing, China Reintroduces Lockdown Measures as 'Second Wave’ of COVID-19 Breakout Begins

Beijing has ordered the closure of schools and colleges in the city after they began seeing a spike in COVID-19 (coronavirus) cases. The closures will begin on Wednesday and are indefinite. Schools have been advised to reintroduce their online programs.

The new cases are linked to the city’s largest wholesale food market, Xinfadi market. Xinfadi supplies the majority of the city’s fresh produce, specifically fruits and vegetables. The market has since been shut down.

Mass testing has also been introduced across the city. Approximately 9,000 employees of the Xinfadi market, alone, have been tested.

There are over 100 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 36 of them were reported on Monday and the numbers are expected to increase.

The resurgence of COVID-19 cases in Beijing may be a glimpse of the future for other countries that have lifted their lockdown measures.
