On Tuesday New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the creation of an illegal fireworks task force.
The creation of the task force comes as complaints continue to reign in from residents about fireworks going off in the middle of the night preventing them from sleeping.
The city has received over 12,000 calls to 9-1-1 and over 4,000 complaints to 3-1-1. Reportedly, many of the fireworks are being heard in Brooklyn.
The 42-person task force will target the "big fish" according to Mayor de Blasio. The 10 police officers, 12 fire marshals, and 20 investigators form the city’s sheriff’s office will be aiming to tackle the problem at the source, by disrupting the sales of illegal fireworks.
It is not clear what punishment, if any, awaits people who get caught setting off the fireworks; Mayor de Blasio emphasized his previous point of cutting off the supply when a reporter asked him that question.
Mayor de Blasio suggested it is mostly “young people” participating in setting off illegal fireworks and “young people” will be the target audience for social media campaigns. The campaigns, led by the FDNY, will help educate individuals on safety measures and will help the task force “root this out”.
There are many theories as to who is setting off the fireworks. A more popular one is that a government-led psychological operation is targeting minority communities in an effort to destabilize the Black Lives Matter movement. While others believe the excess use of fireworks is linked to the up-and-coming Fourth of July holiday.
