Look out everyone, Senator McConnell just proposed a major cut to unemployment benefits. Senate Republicans are proposing to reduce the weekly unemployment benefit from $600 to $200. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic families have been depending on unemployment benefits to stay financially stable.
Since the reopening on certain states, republicans are eager to slash the $600 extra being paid to 25 million Americans who have lost their jobs amid the pandemic, arguing the federal bonus disincentives people from returning to work since many were getting more in unemployment and supplement that they had been getting paid according to the NYPost. Many people have complained that those on unemployment make more than those actually working.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has called on Sen. McConnell to continue the $600 payments during a press conference on Sunday.“Unemployment insurance has expired. Over 1.7 million New York depends on unemployment insurance through no fault of their own,” he said.
It seems as if President Donald Trump and the Republican Senators will not allow the unemployment benefits to last much longer.
