Let’s get into this Black Excellence!
Jason Wright has been appointed by The Washington Football Team as their new president. Making Wright the youngest president and the first Black president of an NFL team in the league’s history.
"What it tries to signal is that, at least in this organization, the hindrances that tend to be in place around Black talent in other places are breaking down," he said, "and that should send a signal more broadly to the shift in culture that Dan and Tanya Snyder, Coach Rivera and myself are now trying to make," Wright said in an interview with ESPN.
In an interview with Good Morning America (GMA), Wright discusses his seven-year career in the NFL followed by him becoming a businessman to describe his new appointment as “an opportunity to bring together my two worlds in a really unique way, at a really unique time.” Wright is responsible for the team's business division and will not be apart of the football side.
The Washington Football team has been at the center of a lot of the recent controversy in the NFL. Some of which includes positive changes. In recent months the team underwent a name and logo change due to the discriminatory nature of the term “redskins” in their former name.
Other controversy surrounding the team includes sexual harassment allegations, and an investigation of gender and race-based employment discrimination. Most recently, the Washington Football Team released one of their start players, Derrius Guice, after he was arrested on several assault charges against his girlfriend.
When asked about the changes he will try to make from inside the organization on GMA, Wright stated that members of the organization on the football and business side are aiming to create a cultural transformation and an organization people want to be a part of.
The series of changes taking place inside the Washington Football team franchise - including appointing the first Black president of an NFL team – leaves people wondering if this will be the cause of widespread change across the NFL.
