Late Sunday afternoon, videos began circulating on social media of a Black man (who was identified as Jacob Blake) being shot several times in the back by Kenosha Wisconsin police. The footage and the details that follow are both heartbreaking and graphic. There were several conflicting reports making rounds on social media that Blake’s three children were present in the back of his vehicle when the shooting occurred. Witnesses say that Blake was trying to break up a fight between two women. When police arrived, they attempted to use a taser on Blake before ultimately deciding to shoot him. Witnesses also claim that Blake was unarmed when the Kenosha police officers let off a reported seven shots to his back.
As far as updates on Blake’s condition, his father posted on Facebook that Blake is alive and in stable condition. In a Twitter update from a childhood friend named Daniel Poneman, he revealed that Blake is in the ICU and fighting for his life. Calling for the hashtag #PrayForJacobBlake.
This devastating story comes at a time when racial tension in the United States is at an all time high. Following the high profile murder of George Floyd in May, outraged Americans accross the country began leading protests. Vying to have all the police officers involved rightfully arrested and charged for murder. The George Floyd case also helped shed light on the story of Breonna Taylor, a Kentucky woman who was shot and killed in her home by Louisville police on a "no-knock" search warrant. This story will undoubtedly continue the important dialogue regarding police brutality, and Black lives.
