With activism on a steady rise due to the senseless murders and lack of accountability in the country currently, the public is becoming mindful of where racism in this country stems from. The root of racism isn’t taught to kids in school and is usually sought out independently. Basic American and Colonial history will show that racism is embedded deep in the foundation of this nation and everything occurring now is a direct result of that. One of the ways to try and rectify this to even the playing field is to properly educate and train our nations’ officials when it comes to the topic of race relations. Well, not on Trump's watch; a new memo released by the White House yesterday moves to ban Federal agencies from any training that mentions “Critical Race Theory” or “White Privilege”.
This ban is a direct response to a federal training program called “Difficult Conversations About Race in Troubling Times” being presented to a number of Federal agencies. The program, which is co sponsored by Offices of Minority and Women Inclusion (OMWI), is speaking directly to white members of federal agencies and offers tips on how to talk about race and take “anti-racist” actions. Drawing directly from “White Fragility” by Dr. Robin DiAngelo, the program suggests ground rules which include the acknowledgement of the need to overcome historical biases and that they are systematically taught misinformation about their group and others in order to promote those biases.
The memo, written by Russell Vought, Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), stated that the President has directed them to stop the use of Federal funding to pay for training that suggests that The U.S. is an inherently racist or evil country, or that any race is inherently racist or evil. "These types of 'training' not only run counter to the fundamental beliefs for which our Nation has stood since its inception, but they also engender division and resentment within the Federal workforce,". This would be a little easier to believe if Breoanna Taylors’ murderers weren’t still walking free and trucks weren’t being driven through protests.
The OMB will issue more detailed guidance following Trumps’ directive seeing how the “Difficult Conversations About Race in Troubling Times” program has been deemed “Un-American” by President Trump.
