Inside Naya Rivera’s Final Moments on Lake Piru

New details regarding the death of Naya Rivera have surfaced, indicating that she may have called for help in those final moments. In early July, Naya Rivera went boating with her son at Lake Piru and was declared missing after her four year old son Josey was found alone in the boat they had rented. The search efforts began at 4:00 PM that day and ultimately became a recovery effort the next. On July 13th, the intense and extensive search efforts came to an end when a body was found and identified as Naya Rivera’s.

The initial details of her death left many questions to be asked. All that we knew at the time was a basic account from Naya’s four-year old son, who said that she had gone for a swim and did not come back up. New details confirm that Naya’s death was indeed accidental and she made one final cry for help before ultimately drowning. She used her final moments to hoist her son back onto the boat and was unable to save herself from Lake Piru, which has a long history for drowning deaths. Rivera’s four-year old son told investigators that Naya raised her hands and screamed for help before disappearing into the water.

An autopsy report from the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office said the cause of death was drowning and the manner of death was an accident. The reports said Rivera did not have a history of "suicidal ideation or attempt." Dispelling any suspicion that Naya voluntarily jumped in lake piru. Toxicology reports show that Naya was not under the influence at the time of the drowning as her blood alcohol levels were normal. No physical conditions or drugs were considered as factors in her death.

Investigative reports show that Rivera was offered a life jacket but declined. Her family has said that she was familiar with Lake Piru and had been there several times. The autopsy and toxicology reports can now put to rest any theories or speculations regarding Naya’s death and can simply be regarded as an unfortunate accidental drowning. Rivera is one of three major deaths from the cast of the Popular television series Glee.
