Is Kim Kardashian Done With Instagram?

After eight years of establishing her brand through the app, Kim Kardashian may be done with instagram. At least temporarily.

Kim Kardashian essentially built Instagram culture, one viral selfie at a time. She’s one of the most followed celebrities on the platform, with 188 million followers keeping up with the head Kardashian. However, this past Tuesday Kardashian announced that she’d be joining a long list of A-list celebrities boycotting IG’s parent company Facebook, over their handling of misinformation and hate speech.

Keeks took to her Twitter to inform her fans that she “can't sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation.” As we inch closer to the elections, people have been especially critical of platforms like Facebook and their handling of misinformation through political ads. Facebook has since announced plans to combat political propaganda in the months leading up to the election. Stating that they will no longer run political ads ahead of the November election. "Misinformation shared on social media has a serious impact on our elections and undermines our democracy. Please join me tomorrow when I will be 'freezing' my Instagram and FB account to tell Facebook to #StopHateForProfit." Says Kardashian, in her statement Tuesday.

The civil rights groups leading the pact in the latest boycott of Facebook, cite the company’s failure to remove a page that promoted a Kenosha militia group. The group encouraged gun toting Americans to take to the streets of Kenosha, amid the fall out of the James Blake shooting. To which Facebook called their failure to act sooner, an “operational mistake”.

The star studded Facebook protest begins today, and such celebrities like Kerry Washington, Jennifer Lawrence, and Leonardo DiCaprio are planning a similar “freeze” of their instagram and Facebook accounts.
