Jeannie Mai Recovering From Emergency Surgery

Jeanie Mai was lighting it up on ABC’s popular dance competition ‘Dancing With The Stars’ before suddenly being sidelined by a serious illness.

As of now, Jeannie is recovering from emergency surgery after being diagnosed with epiglottitis. According to Healthline, epiglottis is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the tissue protecting the windpipe becomes inflamed.

Due to the severity of Mai’s condition, she had to withdraw from the competition. Jeannie’s withdrawal from the competition threw the contestants for a loop, and Monday’s show did not result in the anticipated double elimination. Instead, only one couple was sent home.

On Monday, Mai informed the Dancing With The Stars audience of her status. She provided the following statement: "I found out that I have a throat abscess, where my tonsils and my throat had gotten so infected that it started permeating to the rest of the areas behind my neck and my ears that I had to get emergency surgery, which is why I'm here now."

Mai revealed this was an urgent matter. She says that her doctor informed her had she waited any longer her throat would’ve closed in.

Mai shared a photo on Instagram from the Hospital following her surgery and she was all smiles. Mai encouraged her fans to vote for the remaining teams still competing for the Mirrorball trophy.

There have been many Dancing With The Stars contestants who have pulled out of the competition due to health scares over the years. Interestingly, Mai’s former co-host on Fox’s Emmy award winning talk show ‘The Real’ had to pull out of the competition after suffering a pulmonary embolism.

This has already been an unprecedented season of DWTS, it is one of the first completion series to return under COVID-19 style production.
