Al Roker Reveals He Has Prostate Cancer

NBC’s Al Roker shared Friday on "Today" that he will undergo surgery following a prostate cancer diagnosis.

Roker revealed that the cancer was discovered in September after a routine medical checkup.

Roker told his co-host’s: "It's a good news-bad news kind of thing. Good news is we caught it early. Not great news is that it's a little aggressive, so I'm going to be taking some time off to take care of this."

Roker’s reason for going public with his diagnosis, was to bring awareness to a disease that is more aggressive in Black men. He explained: “ 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime "but for African American men that number 1 in 7 and is more deadly." Roker would go on to stress the importance of detecting and treating this cancer as early as possible.

Roker is a well respected name in the media, so it comes as no surprise that he was met with an outpour of well wishes. Fellow NBC anchor Hoda Kotb shared a heartfelt message to her Instagram.

Kotb wrote: Our al. You never miss a milestone.. you've been there for all of our moments... good or painful.. Haley's arrival... my breast cancer diagnosis.... know this @alroker we will be here for you too.... you've got this ," with a picture of Al holding her daughter.

Roker will undergo surgery next week at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

The legendary weatherman has been a staple on New York news for nearly 50 years. He began working at NBC in 1978 and began his signature gig as the host of “Today” in 1996. Roker is arguably one of the most influential anchors in the history of broadcast news.
