Cori Bush Claims Her Republican Colleagues Called Her “Breonna” Because Of Her Breonna Taylor Mask

Missouri Representative-elect Cori Bush made a devastating revelation on Friday after starting her new duties in congress. Bush claimed her Republican colleagues mistakenly called her “Breonna” while she was wearing a Breonna Taylor mask. This alarmed Bush, as Breonna Taylor’s story has been one of the defining moments of this year.

Bush took to Twitter to speak about her experience: “It’s Day One, so I’m wearing my “Breonna Taylor” mask. A few of my Republican colleagues have called me Breonna, assuming that’s my name. It hurts. But I’m glad they’ll come to know her name & story because of my presence here. Breonna must be central to our work in Congress.”

Cori Bush became the first Black congresswoman in Missouri when she defeated republican Anthony Rogers. Bush now represents Missouri's first congressional district.

Stories like Breonna Taylor’s mean a great deal to Cori Bush, she started gaining traction for leading protests in Ferguson after the death of Michael Brown. Bush told reporters, Bush told them that the comments from her colleagues were both disheartening and "hurtful," considering Breonna has been front page news for the last several months.

Bush took the opportunity to see the silver lining and take the “high road” in this situation. Bush told the media “it's okay because we'll educate and we'll make sure that people know who she is, what she stood for," Bush continued. "That she was an award-winning EMT, you know, in her community, that she was someone who deserves justice right now."

Bush is still highly enthusiastic about getting to work, she says that she hopes to make “real change” as the first Black congresswoman to represent Missouri.
