Choreographer JaQuel Knight Makes History As The First Person To Copyright Dance Moves

Choreographer JaQuel Knight has launched a company to copyright dance moves. With the rise of Tik Tok fame, dancers are facing copyright issues with their dance moves. There have been multiple incidents where Tik Tok choreographers are not credited for their dance moves.

Recently Jimmy Fallon invited Addison Rae to show off her dance moves but the creators of the dances were not credited. Most of which are Black TikTok creators.

Well, JaQuel Knight created a company to put an end to this situation. Knight has made history by becoming the first choreographer to get his dance moves copyrighted according to Variety. He also told Variety, the business will operate like a record label: it’ll sign talented choreographers, and then represent them in developing new material, brokering licensing deals, and legally protecting their intellectual property.

“COPYRIGHTING MOVEMENT IS ABOUT PUTTING THE POWER BACK IN THE ARTIST’S HANDS,” KNIGHT SAID. “WE SET A HISTORIC PRECEDENT WITH OUR ‘SINGLE LADIES’ COPYRIGHT ACHIEVEMENT, AND WE ARE THRILLED TO BE LAUNCHING KNIGHT CHOREOGRAPHY & MUSIC PUBLISHING, INC. SO THAT THE NEXT GENERATION OF ARTISTS ARE AFFORDED THE SAME PLATFORM, RESOURCES AND TOOLS TO THRIVE, CREATIVELY AND FINANCIALLY, IN THE COMMERCIAL MUSIC INDUSTRY” said Knight.

You may recognize him as the choreographer for music videos like WAP, Single Ladies, and more.
