Awards that are geared towards and award exclusively to Black people are few and far between but since its inception in 1967, the NAACP Images awards have been sure to highlight the most talented Black entertainers in their fields. Just yesterday, NAACP announced that iconic comedian and actor Eddie Murphy will be inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame during the ceremony this year.

The prestigious award, that is also held by strong names such as Ray Charles, Little Richard, Arthea Franklin and more, will be presented to Murphy by his long time colleague and friend Aresnio Hall. The Hall of Fame Award is an honor only given to those who can be considered a pioneer in their respective field and whose influence has shaped their profession for years to come. Proven to be one of the most commercially successful actors and comedians in the motion picture business, Murphy has solidified his place in entertainment history.

Following in the footsteps of his older brother Charlie, Eddie Murphy started off his career as a stand up comedian as a teenager and ended up joining the cast of the very popular late night show Saturday Night Live. By the tender age of 21, Murphy starred in the box office hit 48 Hours and went on to star in other hits such as: Trading Place, Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, Harlem Nights, The Nutty Professor, Dr. Dolittle, Shrek and more. No stranger to being awarded for the great movies he’s starred in, Murphy has racked up two NAACP Image Awards, Golden GLoves, Emmys, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Grammys.

“We are honored to celebrate one of the most influential comedic geniuses in the entertainment industry and an individual who has inspired a generation of Black talent,” said Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP. “To this day, Eddie Murphy’s work continues to bring joy and laughter to individuals around the world, and he is an amazing example of Black excellence, creativity, and artistry.”
