Kamala Harris To Be Sworn In By Justice Sonia Sotomayor

Wednesday’s inauguration is going to be an event full of representation like never before. In more ways than one, many ethnic backgrounds and cultures are going to be present in the ceremonies.

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor on Wednesday. This was a call made by Harris herself, as she was inspired by Justice Sotomayor's background. The two share a similar background as prosecutors, Sonia Sotomayor was a top prosecutor in New York for over a decade before becoming a Supreme Court Justice.

Both of these women have made their mark on history by being pioneers for Black and Hispanic women respectively. In 2009, Sotomayor became the first Latina woman to serve on the Supreme Court, she was also the third woman in history to be appointed to high court. Kamala Harris is going to become the first woman to serve as Vice President of the United States, she also has the distinct honor of becoming the first Black and South Asian woman to do so.

Sonia Sotomayor is familiar with taking the stage for an inauguration, She swore in President-elect Joe Biden as vice president in 2013.

Harris will also use two Bibles for the swearing-in, one of which belonged to Thurgood Marshall, the first Black Supreme Court justice.

Thurgood Marshall is a graduate of Howard University, the same historically black university that Vice President-elect Kamala Harris attended. She has touted Marshall as one of her great heroes in a 2019 interview.

Kamala Harris became known for her no-nonsense approach in the courtroom, something she takes from her inspiration of Thurgood Marshall. Kamala explained: “Thurgood Marshall is one of the main reasons I wanted to be a lawyer,” praising him as “a fighter” in the courtroom.

Her persona in the courtroom made her the target of racist attacks by President Trump on the campaign trail, where he continuously referred to her as an “evil” “nasty woman.” Trump constantly referenced the way she treated Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his hearings as a means to rile up his base. Kavanaugh wasn’t a special case for Harris, who had served as the top prosecutor in California since 2010. She always had a reputation for being an intimidating force in the courtroom, which was the genesis behind those defaming cop memes that surfaced when she ran for office a few years ago.

The second Bible Kamala will use belongs to Mrs. Regina Shelton, a close family friend who Harris praises to have been like a second mother to Harris and her sister Maya. Harris used Shelton's bible during her swearing in for California Attorney General and the United States Senate.
