'Madea' Prequel From Tyler Perry in the Works at Showtime

Tyler Perry is producing a highly anticipated prequel series about the early life of his iconic character Madea for Showtime.

Showtime has a multitude of various scripts for the plans, which is titled "Mabel." The show revolves around Madea's early life long before she was the force of nature she is known as today.

Mabel is set in Atlanta in 1972. It will tell the story of Mabel Simmons: Long before she was the force of nature known as Madea, she was a smart, fierce, irresistible, dangerous, crazy 20-something year old black woman who set the city — and the world — on fire.

Perry and Tim Palen are the creators and executive producers of "Mabel," with JaNeika James and JaSheika James assigned to write and executive produce.

Perry is one of the most influential creators working in entertainment today with a lengthy list of movie and TV projects to his name, both in front of and behind the production. The Madea persona originated onstage during his time as a playwright before he arrived in Hollywood. He has portrayed the role in all nine Madea movies to date, as well as cameo appearances in the films "Meet the Browns" and "I Can Do Bad All by Myself." The first movie in the franchise was "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" in 2005, while the most up-to-date film was "A Madea Family Funeral" in 2019. To date, the nine Madea movies have earned over $500 million worldwide.

Twin sisters JaNeika and JaSheika James' tracklist include the hit Fox shows "Empire" as well as "True Story" and the upcoming reboot of "Gossip Girl." JaSheika has also worked on the series "Revenge." The dynamic sisters are currently creating the series "Philly Reign" at USA Network. Mary J. Blige is an executive producer.
