Meet The Women Behind The "BlackLivesMatter" Movement

In 2013, three Black female organizers — Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi created a Black-centered movement-building project called Black Lives Matter. Black Lives Matter started with a social media hashtag, #BlackLivesMatter, after George Zimmerman's acquittal in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in 2012. The movement originated in 2014 after Michael Brown died in Missouri and Eric Garner in New York. The movement has proved itself a global movement, particularly after George Floyd'sFloyd's death at the hands of police in Minneapolis, MN. #Black Lives Matter has recently initiated demonstrations worldwide protesting police brutality and systematic racism that affects the Black community.

According to the Black Lives Matter website, they were "established in 2013 in response to Trayvon Martin's murderer's release. The Black Lives Matter Foundation, Inc is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada, whose purpose is to stop white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. By fighting and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black creativity, and centering Black joy, we are winning immediate changes in our lives.
