THE U.S. COULD EXPERIENCE A NEW ‘EXTREME HEAT BELT’ BY 2053

This summer has been pretty brutal when it came to heat waves in New York. Well, an “extreme heat belt” issue is expected to emerge in 2053.

According to NBC News, a report released Monday by the nonprofit research group First Street Foundation, found that within a column of America's heartland stretching from Texas and Louisiana north to the Great Lakes, residents could experience heat index temperatures above 125 degrees Fahrenheit by 2053 — conditions that are more commonly found in California's Death Valley or in parts of the Middle East.

“Increasing temperatures are broadly discussed as averages, but the focus should be on the extension of the extreme tail events expected in a given year,” Matthew Eby, founder, and CEO of First Street Foundation said in a statement.

“We need to be prepared for the inevitable, that a quarter of the country will soon fall inside the Extreme Heat Belt with temperatures exceeding 125 degrees Fahrenheit and the results will be dire,” Eby said.

You can also use an online tool that the nonprofit has created for users to see their estimated heat risk.
