Verzuz Sold To Triller: Here Is What We Know So Far

What started off as a fun social media duel between your favorite writers, producers, and eventually artists to keep fans entertained during the Coronavirus lockdown - has now become a commercial product.

Timbaland and Swizz Beatz just sold Verzuz to Triller Network, parent company of the Triller app. As part of the deal, Timbaland and Swizz will be joining the Triller Verzuz management team to help oversee music and other company strategies.

The financial details of the deal were not disclosed, but according to Billboard Timbaland and Swizz Beatz have become large shareholders in Triller Network and in turn have allocated part of their equity stake to the 43 performers who’ve appeared on Verzuz to date.

This means that all of the participants in the official Verzuz battles are now shareholders and partners. This list includes everyone from Brandy, Monica, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight, Ashanti, Keyshia Cole, Johnta Austin, Ne-Yo, and most recently D’Angelo.

Bobby Sarnevesht, executive chairman and co-owner of Triller, announced the acquisition. He says, "Both Triller and Verzuz share the ‘artist first, music first’ vision. We view this acquisition as more of a partnership than an acquisition, as Swizz, Timbaland and the other 43 artists who are all becoming shareholders and partners in Triller Verzuz from this day forward become our voice."

Triller Network co-controlling shareholder Ryan Kavanaugh chimed in: "In our generation, Verzuz has made a bigger impact on music than any other company we know. With this acquisition, Triller continues its evolution to be at the center of culture and the center of music. Who better to help shape Triller’s music future than the top artists in the world overseen by Timbaland and Swizz?"

It was only a matter of time before a major commercial move like this would come for the Verzuz platform. The platform helped the featured artists receive a significant increase in sales and on demand streams, they even had major sponsors like Ciroc and Dortios involved.

Verzuz has also expanded into sports with its recent NFL collaboration, NFL Pro Bowl Verzuz. Future plans include more sport verticals as well as ventures into comedy and live events.

Many fans believe that the more commercial and produced the Verzuz battles became, compromised its authenticity and value. It started off as a virtual battle on Instagram Live, but eventually expanded into a live stream on Apple TV - With both artists in the same room.

With Timbaland and Swizz Beatz directing a portion of their equity stake to the artists who have appeared on the platform, this bares similarity to Jay-Z's recent deal with Tidal and Jack Dorsey.
