WNBA Star Receives Top Surgery/ Breast Removal

WNBA player Layshia Clarendon underwent top surgery at the beginning of the month, a liberating step in their journey to becoming authentically themselves.

Clarendon Tweeted : I’m usually not scared to share news publicly but the amount of hate, myths & ignorance actually had me debating sharing this joy. I had Top Surgery! I’m feeling free & euphoric in my body & want Trans people to know and see that we’ve always existed & no one can erase us!

[I will include Tweet in post]

Clarendon plays for The Liberty, owned by Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai. They’ll be able to represent trans and non-binary individuals on the court, as the team is fully behind thier decision.

"The New York Liberty family is in full support of Layshia Clarendon and their choice to live authentically. The Liberty has been and will continue to be an organization that celebrates the individuality of all people. Layshia is a proud embodiment of our belief that our strength lies in our truth and no one should live constrained by societal boundaries. Layshia’s journey as a pioneering athlete, along with their activism and advocacy work, is an inspiring call for each of us to honor our humanity above all else."

Clarendon ,29, was signed to the team back in February of 2020.

They are a major advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, on and off the court.

Like most people, it has been a long journey to self discovery for Clarendon. In 2015, she told the The Players’ Tribune: “I identify as black, gay, female, non-cisgender and Christian.” Fast forward to today, and they identify as transgender and non-binary.

For those who do not know, Transgender people are people whose gender identity is different from the gender they were thought to be at birth. Gender non-binary is an umbrella term to describe any gender identity that does not fit into the gender binary of male and female. It is important to view gender as a spectrum, and some folks do not fit in one category.

Layshia does not identify as a man, uses she/her/they/them/he/him. They simply do not fit in a box.

They credit their friend Myranda Warden for helping her to discover her identity. "There’s No One Way To Be Trans" — wrote, "Shoutout to one of my closest friends who was the first person to show me that transness can exist outside of the binary. @mywarden showed me that you can be trans and non binary, genderqueer and so much more. That the more you embrace all of your gender the more free you become.” in an Instagram post.

Why go public with this decision? They want to be able to inspire future generations of transgender basketball players, that it is possible to be transgender in the league. You do not have to mask who you are to make others feel comfortable, that is the message that Layshia Clarendon hopes to send with her new reaffirming surgery.
